An old adage states: “Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand.” The last part of this statement is the essence of inquiry-based learning. Inquiry implies involvement that leads to understanding.
Furthermore, involvement in learning implies possessing skills and attitudes that permit you to seek resolutions to questions and issues while you construct new knowledge.
Lavender is a great springboard for inquiry-based learning. At Lavender-Blu we try to promote lavender via various avenues. One of the key components to our business model is to promote the versatility of lavender by connecting with our community through educational presentations.
This past spring we held a presentation on the subject of lavender at the Durham East 4H Garden Club. The club consisted of almost a dozen members ranging in ages from 10 – 21. We had a great time demonstrating how to make a lavender wand, how to propagate lavender as well as how lavender buds taste in culinary delights.
One of the members, 14 year-old Caitlin Gaudet from Blackstock, Ontario took our presentation a step further. She decided to focus on lavender for her 4H Garden Club Project Board. Her interest in lavender opened up a world of learning about distillation, propagation, culinary uses, ancient history, bees, landscaping and more! Her project board was showcased at the annual Blackstock, Orono and Port Hope Fair. I was so impressed to hear that Caitlin was working on this project that I decided to visit her in her garden for a photo shoot and an interview.
As exemplified by Caitlin, lavender can be incorporated into many different sensory activities and inquiry-based learning blocks. The versatility of lavender allows for involvement that leads to a deeper understanding of subjects such as gardening, farming, xeriscaping, preserving, distillation, culinary herbs, aromatherapy, travel, and more. Not to mention, a visit to a lavender farm makes for a great field-trip!
